Your customers already expect it. Your shops already hold the stock. What is missing is the piece that connects the two the moment someone places an order.

The short answer. UK Shopify retailers offer same day delivery by fulfilling online orders from the nearest store that holds the stock and booking a local courier the moment the order is placed. Shopify's native local delivery covers simple cases, and at the time of writing Shopify's built in Uber Direct integration has not launched in the UK. Retailers with several stores usually need an orchestration layer like RANDEMRETAIL that checks live store stock, chooses the location and books the courier automatically

The demand is not in question

Capital One Shopping's same day delivery research puts it plainly: 80% of consumers expect retailers to offer same day delivery, and only 51% of online retailers do. Most retailers with a store estate already have the stock within a few miles of the customer. They just cannot see it, route to it and dispatch from it fast enough.

If you are a UK retailer with several shops, you should be offering 2 hour delivery to every customer within 3 miles of each one. The stock is already sitting on your shelves

What Shopify gives you out of the box

Shopify includes a local delivery option, and for a single shop delivering to its own neighbourhood it works. This can become a problem once you have several stores. According to Shopify's Help Center:

    • The delivering location must hold the inventory for the entire order.

    • The maximum delivery radius is 160 kilometres, or 100 miles.

    • Shipped items and locally delivered items cannot be combined in one order.

    • B2B checkouts do not support local delivery.

    • You arrange and manage the drivers yourself.

Shopify also launched a native Uber Direct integration in December 2025 for Shopify Plus merchants. At launch it was live in the United States, Canada and France, with more regions promised. At the time of writing the UK is not on that list, so UK Shopify Plus merchants cannot simply switch it on

Same day needs a proper orchestration engine, not just a courier

The UK has no shortage of couriers who can get a parcel across a city in two hours. That part is solved. What breaks same day delivery is everything that has to happen before the courier arrives.

Any courier can get a parcel across London in two hours. None of them can tell you whether the jumper is actually on the shelf in the Islington store.

When same day works, six things happen in sequence, in seconds, without anyone touching a spreadsheet:

    1. Checkout shows same day only where it is real. The option appears when a nearby store holds live, sellable stock for the basket, and disappears when it does not.

    2. The order is routed to the right store. Not the oldest location, not the flagship by default, but the closest store with the stock and the capacity to pick it.

    3. A courier is booked at the moment of order, or when the order is packed and ready to ship. You choose which. Either way, no one in the store has to log into a portal and request a driver.

    4. The store team picks and packs with guidance. The order arrives on a device with what to pick, where it is and when the courier will be at the door.

    5. Tracking flows back to Shopify. The customer gets updates from your brand, not a stranger's text message.

    6. Exceptions are handled automatically. If the item is missing, the order is rerouted to the next store or switched to next day, and the customer is told why.

Steps one, two and six are where most same day projects fail. They depend on accurate store stock and routing logic, and they sit underneath the storefront, not inside the courier's app.

Mixed baskets are where things get complicated, which is whyRANDEMRETAIL exists

Customers do not shop in delivery methods. A single basket might hold a jacket available in the store round the corner, a pair of boots only in the warehouse and a gift the customer wants to collect on the way home. Shopify's native local delivery cannot combine those in one order.

An orchestration layer splits the order behind the scenes: the jacket goes same day from the store, the boots ship from the warehouse, the gift is reserved for click and collect. The customer sees one order and one confirmation. Your teams see three clean jobs.

What it looks like in practice

SKIMS used RANDEMRETAIL to do exactly this in Los Angeles. As soon as an order is placed, the platform books an Uber courier and the order is delivered within two hours inside a ten mile radius of the fulfilling store. The mechanics are the same in Manchester as they are in Los Angeles: live stock, the right store, a courier booked automatically and exceptions handled without a phone call.

RANDEMRETAIL is an ecommerce orchestration platform built natively on Shopify and BigCommerce. The Same Day module books Uber Direct and Roadie couriers today, and the Carrier Module connects the courier accounts you already hold, with no markups and no new contracts. It sits alongside Shopify checkout and POS rather than replacing them, and switches on as a module rather than a programme.

How to price it without losing margin

Same day does not have to be free to be valuable. Most retailers start by charging a premium for it, offering it free above a basket threshold, or limiting it to their highest margin categories. The single biggest protection for margin is accuracy: an order that is routed to a store without the stock costs you a courier fee, a refund and a customer. Offer same day only where live stock supports it, and the economics look after themselves

     Frequently asked questions

Can UK Shopify Plus retailers use Uber Direct natively?

Not at the time of writing. Shopify's native Uber Direct integration launched in December 2025 for Shopify Plus merchants in the United States, Canada and France, with more regions promised. UK retailers can still offer courier booked same day delivery through an Page 3 of 4 Same day delivery from store for UK Shopify retailers orchestration layer that connects to delivery partners directly.

How does same day delivery from store work for a Shopify retailer?

The checkout checks live stock in nearby stores, the order is routed to the closest store that can fulfil it, a courier is booked automatically, the store team picks and packs, and tracking flows back to Shopify. If the item is missing, the order is rerouted rather than cancelled.

What are the limits of Shopify's native local delivery?

Shopify's Help Center states that the delivering location must hold stock for the whole order, the maximum radius is 100 miles, shipped and locally delivered items cannot be combined in one order, B2B checkouts are not supported, and you manage the drivers yourself.

Can customers mix same day delivery, click and collect and standard shipping in one basket?

Not with Shopify's native local delivery. An orchestration platform such as RANDEMRETAIL can split one order across methods, sending part same day from a store, part from the warehouse and reserving part for click and collect, while the customer sees a single order.

What stops same day delivery from working for multi store retailers?

Inaccurate store stock. If the system offers same day for an item that is not actually on the shelf, the order fails after the courier is booked. Live stock across every store, routing that understands capacity, and automatic exception handling matter more than which courier you use.

Should UK retailers charge for same day delivery?

Usually, at least at first. Common approaches are a flat premium, free same day above a basket threshold, or limiting it to higher margin categories. Margin is best protected by only offering same day where live store stock supports it, which avoids failed deliveries and refunds.
